Methodology
How we rate
Every product on ElectronicsRatings is scored out of 100 against the same three criteria. This page explains what those numbers mean and how we make money.
The three criteria
We score each product from 0 to 100 on three things.
- Performance
- How well the product does the job it was built for. For headphones that means sound and noise cancellation; for monitors and TVs, picture quality; for laptops and phones, speed and battery life.
- Build quality
- Materials, fit and finish, comfort, and how well it should hold up to everyday use.
- Value
- What you get for the money compared with the alternatives at a similar price. A cheap product can score well here, and an expensive one can score poorly.
The overall score
The overall score is a weighted judgment, not an average of the three sub-scores. Which criterion matters most depends on the product: a flagship TV is mostly about picture quality, while a budget pair of earbuds lives or dies on value. We weigh the criteria for what the product is and who it's for, then give one number.
We label overall scores like this:
- 90+ Excellent
- 80–89 Very good
- 70–79 Good
- <70 Fair
No paid placement
We never accept payment for placement. Brands can't buy a review, a higher score or a better position. Rankings are ordered by score alone.
How affiliate links work
The "Where to buy" buttons on our reviews are affiliate links. If you click one and buy something, the retailer may pay us a commission. The price you pay is the same.
Commissions are how we pay for the site, but they never change a score. A product that earns us nothing is ranked by exactly the same rules as one that does.
